Well, now that the Christian Music Superbowl is done, it’s time for questions. Who do you think should have won?
I opened up the Superbowl to everybody, meaning that it essentially was a popularity contest, a race to gather more fans than the other artists competing. Let’s pretend it wasn’t a popularity contest and the winner was picked solely on merit – be it musical creativity, excellent song writing, devotion to their career, passion for God, impact in the world, or whatever – who most deserves the win?

Man, this is a hard question.
I partially think that Destroy Nate Allen should have won (as happened). First, his songs are amazingly singable, which is rare now-a-days. Second, he’s a great guy. Third, he’s giving everything away for free. And fourth, if he was able to gather more fans to vote for him than everybody else, then he really should win.
Then, I think Psalters really deserved to win. Not only are they great musicians, but they’re always inventing new ways of making creative music. There’s a ton of energy in their songs. They are passionate both about the music and about God. They really want to help people, from what I can tell. And they give their albums away for free download.
… After thinking for a while, I’m gonna give my final vote to Danielson. Creative (a little bizarre at times). Opened the door for Sufjan Stevens, Anathallo, Cold Comfort Band, and other similar groups to start making music. Remain totally up-front about God and devoted to their faith, but also bring in artistry and creativity like few other bands. Willing to sing openly about God at bars, clubs, coffeehouses, and churches, Christian concerts, etc. They’ve got a secular following even though they’re very open about their beliefs in God. Though I like other styles of music better, I really respect Daniel Smith and his family, more than I do a lot of artists.

Jake.
Thank you for the kinds words once again!
I’d also have to vote for Danielson and Psalters.. They both have been influence on me and many other people around them!

I think I have to agree with Jake. He asked me this question the other day, and my first response was Psalters, just because their music is just a part of what they’re already doing with their lives. Their music just seems to flow out of the missionary work they do and out of the relationships with people they’ve made, and out of their love for God and His people.
But I also would choose Danielson, becuase they’ve taken Christian art and music out of the lame and superficial box it has been in. They create art to glorify God, and God was the first and greatest Grand Artist. What they do points to Him, and they do it in a (sometimes out-there) fashion that is unique and creative.
I love their hearts for God and His people!! Other people that I think should have made it further on in the game are mewithoutYou and the Listening. The Listening does worship that would be hard to do as “worship” at church, sort of un-recreateable but really anointed. I listen to them while running in the mornings sometimes and I get shivers because I can just feel God in their music, if that makes sense.

I’m torn between Keith Green and mewithoutYou. Much love to both.

Yeah, Keith Green’s another good one to have win. I mean, he died almost thirty years ago, and we’re still considering him to win the first Christian Music Superbowl. That’s a huge impact he made with his life.
And mewithoutYou? Great, ground-breaking music, poetic lyrics, and an honesty and truthfulness in how they talk about their faith. I would have been happy to see them win too.
