yeah, i agree…i guess in my head there’s a difference between something being beautiful and something being aesthetically pleasing; but that’s a whole other topic…

So, basically, you’re saying that beauty does have a value in and of itself, but you come to this conclusion only by defining true beauty as godliness.

I can agree with this, but what I’m coming against here is the idea that if something is pleasing to the eyes or ears, then it’s beautiful and therefore godly.

I like all of your points a lot…I’m still thinking about #2 a lot though. Maybe it’s all the critical theory classes I took in college about art and beauty and truth, etc. Off the top of my head, I tend to think that true beauty points to God the Creator, but that beauty that is not pure and godly is not real beauty at all but a demonic counterfeit to the real beauty of our Creator.

Just a couple of scriptures related to this that I read a day or two ago: Psalm 96:6, 9.

True beauty should cause us to fear God or to be in awe of Him. It seems anything that draws us away from Him is a counterfeit. I’m not disagreeing, just adding some extra thoughts that come to mind with thinking about beauty and godliness.

Thanks for the biblical references behind your rants. I have been checking your blog for good music for awhile now as I coordinate a women’s retreat for a church in 5-O (I thought quite the crazy God-thing when I read one day that we live in the same town and I had come across your blog randomly!). Not too crazy about some of the music the past few days, but your rant today was great!
