A friend of mine (Sandwiches There) gave me a brilliant idea the other day for The Blah Blah – host a Christian Music Superbowl, where the top Christian bands and artists would face off against each other until only one remained standing on February 3, 2006 – Superbowl Sunday.
So, in the next couple weeks, I’ll be putting up the first few bands to face off against each other, and you can all vote on the winners. Use whatever criteria you want. If you want to vote according to musical expertise, feel free. If you want to vote by looks, go for it. Wanna vote randomly? I don’t care.
Anyway, to begin the Christian Music Superbowl I, I’m gathering suggestions for bands and musicians to include. I’m sure you all have ideas, so e-mail me at theblahblah8007@yahoo.com, leave a comment below, or (the best option) leave a post on your own blog linking here, thereby improving my Technorati score. I’m using the term “Christian Music” to mean music made by Christians, not necessarily music marketed as “Christan Music.”
I hope to have the first face-off in the next couple of weeks, so tell your friends to come by and vote.

In preparation for the tournament, and as I prepare my bracket, remind me again how we decide who the “Christian artists” really are. Should we scour the internet and liner notes for confessions of faith? What if they say they believe in Jesus but don’t want to be associated with the Christian movement? (Bono, I’m looking in your direction.) Inquisition with hot pokers? Aversion to Holy Water? Comprehensive Fruits of the Spirit assessment?

I suggest we take Monty Python as our guideline and see if the alleged “Christian” weighs the same as a duck.
I really do hate this whole “Christian Music” term…
Seriously, though, use whatever guidelines you want, and if I disagree, I’ll just throw it out, because I can do that.
And send me as many suggestions as you want too. Again, if I get too many, I’ll throw some out. That’s the benefit of being a dictatorship and not a democracy at The Blah Blah.

Hey, I think you should include Psalters, Danielson, Doug Burr, and the Listening (4 completely different sounds). And since I’m the dictator’s wife, I think my suggestions are pretty good, huh? 😉

Hi Jake,
To “play” in this Super Bowl, do they have to be currently in the “scene”? I confess, I stopped buying “Christian” music quite some time ago, so I’m a little behind the times… or else well off the beaten path. There are some solid choices below. Also, King’s X would be on my list if their music had not suffered from Doug’s disillusionment and life choices- some of their early stuff is awesome.
I’ll humbly offer a few nominations:
The Violet Burning
Over The Rhine
Mortal / Fold Zandura / FoldZan
Stickman Jones / Annie Quick
Fleming and John
Keith Green
Oracle
Sarah Masen
Sheri Youngward
Massivid
The Benjamin Gate
Third Day

Thanks, Tom! For this year, since I haven’t got everything figured out, I’m allowing bands that may not be around anymore to compete. It probably makes more sense to do it the other way, but I wanted to give some of the great guys from the past like Keith Green an opportunity to kick some butt.

You have to count Sufjan Stevens as a “band” – he has like 500 “band members” on his tours anyway.
And if he counts, you have my favorite to win it all.

Hi I think that you should include the artists Josh Clubb (he’s actually really good!) and Anberlin (they are great!)
